From The Rivera For Senate Campaign:

Michelle Rivera Launches Senate Campaign, Announces Initial Endorsements

Community activist Michelle Rivera today announced her campaign for the Senate District 1 special election, running as a Democrat. The seat became vacant due to the tragic passing of Senator Goodwin, a champion for the poor and legend in the Senate.

Born in Puerto Rico, Michelle came to the mainland as a child.  As a teenager, her family suffered from poverty.  She lost her father to suicide, and she and her family were homeless.  Fortunately, public housing in Chad Brown gave them a home.  Unable to afford college, Michelle enlisted in the military and deployed to Afghanistan to serve our country.  When she came home, she enrolled in CCRI and then RIC, eventually graduating with a Masters in Social Work.  She now works at Progreso Latino, a nonprofit social service agency in Central Falls.  She’s dedicated her life to lifting up the vulnerable, and she’s running for the State Senate to continue that fight.

“My life has shown me the importance of investing in people,” said Michelle, “I’m running for the State Senate because too many of our neighbors are struggling.  Many people in our community suffer from poverty, but even middle class families are suffering.  Our neighborhoods face high utility bills, brutal rents, unaffordable homes, property tax hikes, and devastating healthcare costs.  We must make greater investments in housing, healthcare, education, climate resilience, and job creation.  To pay for it, we must repeal the 2006 tax cuts for the rich.”

Councilman Justin Roias, whose ward overlaps Senate District 1, announced his endorsement of Michelle.  Councilman Roias said, “I’m proud to endorse Michelle because my constituents deserve a Senator who understands the struggles they face.”

Representative David Morales, whose district overlaps with Senate District 1, announced his endorsement of Michelle.  Representative Morales said, “I’m excited to endorse Michelle because our community deserves a Senator who will fight for the investments we need.”

Representative Enrique Sanchez, who represents a nearby district in Providence, announced his endorsement of Michelle.  Representative Sanchez said, “What inspires me most about Michelle is her compassion for the vulnerable in our society.”

Senator Sam Bell, who represents a neighboring Senate district in Providence, also announced his endorsement of Michelle.  “What makes me so excited about Michelle is that she’s not afraid to take on the wealthy special interests who have done so much damage to our state.”
