U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) announced today that Angel Norquist from Barrington Christian Academy was awarded the first-place prize in this year’s Congressional Art Competition. The annual contest seeks to spotlight local talent and promote arts education, fostering the next generation of Rhode Island artists. Cicilline, who has run the competition each year since coming to Congress, held a virtual award ceremony to recognize the high school artists who participated.
Angel’s painting titled “Balance,” which earned her the first-place title, will be exhibited in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Second place went to Gayatri Buchta from East Providence High School for her piece titled “Tranquil,” which will be displayed in the Congressman’s Washington, D.C. office. The third-place winner, Morgan Rene Morrison from Mount Hope High School, received Congressional Recognition and will have her painting “Medusa’s Gaze” displayed in the Congressman’s District Office in Pawtucket.
“The talent in the Congressional Art Competition gets better and better each year. It’s truly a testament to how talented Rhode Island’s young people are and the impact our incredible art community has on our students,” Cicilline said. “I want to thank all the wonderful artists who participated in this year’s competition. Angel, Gayatri, and Morgan are great examples of the kind of talent that this competition is designed to highlight. I look forward to seeing their artwork every day as a reminder of the power of the arts to transform lives and strengthen communities.”
The three awardees were selected by a panel of judges from a group of 16 talented young artists who submitted artwork to be considered for the 2021 Congressional Art Competition.
