Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI-01) released the following statement:
“Today marks the 51st Anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, a landmark decision that affirmed reproductive freedom as a constitutional right for all Americans. Free from the interference of politicians, this right empowered women to make a deeply personal decision,” said Congressman Gabe Amo.
“But today is also a somber reminder that a year and half ago, the Supreme Court stripped away this very reproductive freedom. Stacked by the former President with extreme, rightwing justices, the Court has had a devastating impact on women’s freedom and put lives at risk.
“Women across the United States are suffering. In some cases, women even fear being called to court for having a miscarriage or seeking abortion care.
“Nevertheless, House Republicans remain determined to pass a national abortion ban, prevent women from accessing FDA-approved medication, and stop women from traveling out-of-state to access care they need. This is unacceptable.
“In Congress, I will always stand up, fight back, and do all I can to support a woman’s right to choose in Rhode Island and across the nation.”
On Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Magaziner Vows to Restore Abortion Rights for All Women Across the Country
As a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, Magaziner voted against House Republican efforts to criminalize abortion and is fighting to protect reproductive health care for women nationwide.
Representative Seth Magaziner (RI-02) issued a statement commemorating the 51th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision and urged Members of Congress to restore abortion rights for all women across the country.
“Women deserve to make decisions about their own bodies, health, and future – not have those decisions made by politicians. As we commemorate the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are reminded of the stark reality that millions of women currently do not have access to abortion care,” said Rep. Seth Magaziner. “But make no mistake – this fight is not over. We will not stop working to restore Roe and codify abortion rights into law once and for all.”
Rep. Magaziner is an original cosponsor of H.R.12 – Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), which is the only legislation that enshrines the principles of Roe v. Wade into law. WHPA creates a statutory right for health care providers to provide abortion care and for their patients to receive that care, free from medically unnecessary restrictions that single out abortion and impede access.
Rep. Magaziner is also a cosponsor of H.R. 782 – Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, which prohibits women from being punished for traveling across state lines to access reproductive health care, and H.Con. Res. 33 – Freedom to Decide Act, which protects access to the abortion pill mifepristone and supports telemedicine across state lines, so doctors can prescribe mifepristone wherever women are in need of health care.
As a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, Rep. Magaziner has been fighting against House Republican attempts to include anti-abortion riders in government funding bills. He has co-sponsored amendments that would remove provisions that criminalize abortion and limit access to reproductive care for women serving in the U.S. military.
Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, abortions have been banned in 14 states and counting. In at least half a dozen others, they are heavily restricted, making it nearly impossible for people to access care. Americans nationwide are feeling the impact of the disastrous decision to overturn Roe. Legal and legislative attacks on abortion rights are causing dangerous repercussions, including shuttered clinics, providers threatened with prosecution, and lives put at risk.
Extreme politicians have doubled down on their assault on women’s rights. They have been pushing for laws that would restrict access to contraception, punish women for seeking abortion care and prosecute doctors willing to help them, and criminalize interstate travel to obtain reproductive care. Several lawmakers, including Speaker Mike Johnson, have vowed to pass a national ban on abortion.
