On Monday, Feb. 17, at 10:00 a.m. ET, U.S. Rep. Seth Magaziner (RI-02) and U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) will hold a press conference with Rhode Island education leaders to address the devastating impacts of proposed cuts to the U.S. Department of Education on Rhode Island communities.
The event follows the confirmation hearing of Linda McMahon as Secretary of Education and comes amid growing concerns about the administration’s plans to abolish the department. Wednesday, President Trump commented that he’d like the department closed ‘immediately’. And reports indicate that officials from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency have already accessed Education Department databases, identifying employees for dismissal and canceling federal contracts.
During the press event, lawmakers and education leaders will outline the real-life consequences that the proposed dismantling of the department would have on Rhode Island students, parents, teachers, public K-12 schools and local colleges & universities.
